Liars and Tyrants and Bears, Oh My!
The news cycle has been tense lately. It’s hard not to wake up and wonder if the war between Russia and Ukraine will move closer or further from your home. Wouldn’t it be nice if the fighting would stay between those who wished to fight? It’s heartbreaking to hear that civilians are caught in cross-fire anywhere. I’d certainly like to hear about some better news.
For the time being, the anxiety-inducing news is unavoidable. Our methods for combatting stress must be ramped up in conjunction. Take some time to read something you enjoy, take a walk, drink some water… make time to improve your well-being.
It’s hard to feel in control when the media bombards us with frightening world events beyond our control. Dedicate some time to maintaining yourself. You’ll feel better at the end of the day.

Two Weeks Left to Finish 75 Hard
I’m currently on day 61 of 75 Hard. For those of you who don’t know, it is a 75 day challenge that has the following aspects:
- Read 10 pages of a book
- One 45-minute workout outside, another 45-minute workout inside or outside (1.5 total hours)
- Any sort of diet plan you wish (NO CHEAT MEALS)
- Drink one gallon of water
- Progress photo
- No alcohol
This challenge has had some difficult trials throughout. Some include working until 2 in the morning or drinking several gulps of water before going to bed. The challenge has helped me develop a grit that I will use long when it’s over. When the going gets tough, I won’t quick on things that I used to quit on.
I’m looking forward to staying committed for these last two weeks and officially completing the challenge. Stay tuned for a deeper reflection whenever I finish!

Freedom in Free Writing
Today was the first day that I tried free writing on my laptop. My goal was to write for about 10 minutes straight, no stops. Whatever thoughts popped in my head were added straight to the document. I noticed how I focused on one topic, left it behind, and then returned to it later. This writing method could be useful for identifying my raw, personal voice.
My hands started to fatigue when my word count was approaching 1000 words. I decided to cut off my writing at that point. I must have reached the 10 minute mark because I don’t quite type 100 words per minute. I am excited to keep up free writing and intend to incorporate it into my daily routine. I was surprised how much freedom I felt compared to how I normally write. I am usually a perfectionist in my writing, paying close attention to grammar and spelling. Writing anything much longer than a double spaced page can sometimes take me more than an hour. With free writing, I wrote an easy two and a half pages in a little over 10 minutes. The source where I learned about free writing encouraged writers to resist the urge to correct anything. I encourage you all to check it out and try it for yourself!

I couldn’t find the exact source where I first learned about free writing, but the above source has many of the same good points.

More Waiting for Dental School
The application process for dental school has been a grueling process. I put in over four months studying for the admission’s test, working usually five to eight hours per day studying. After crushing the test, filling out the application took about another two months and a few thousand dollars. Just to apply to six schools!
A few months later and I received an invite to interview with two schools (for the following month). While I was spending hours prepping for the interviews, I received crushing rejections from four schools without even getting an interview. Hopefully my application money helps them buy nice new things for their school! The other interviews with the inviting schools went very well. It has been about 2 months since the interviews happened, and I just found out today that I am on a waiting list for one of them. The other has yet to contact me.
If anyone else has had a tough time with the dental school or medical school application process, you are not going through this alone.

Maybe it’s time for shorter blogs..?
When I started this blog, I thought writing long posts would be an easy thing to do. I had so much motivation to sit down for a few hours and crank out blog posts every few days. Now the third month of the year has just arrived, and I have noticed my motivation for writing is lacking. I am determined to pick back up on writing with a new plan.
Make the posts shorter and sweeter.
I often fall into the habit of over-preparing for things or analyzing them until paralysis. This also happens when I start workout programs that consume large chunks of my time. To combat these issues, what seems to work is starting back on the ground level and working my way back up. For anyone who’s going through a struggle and wants to quit, don’t quit! Take some pressure off yourself. Go back to the basics. And build something greater than you had before.

A New Weightlifting Plan
Recently, I have been getting into Dr. Brett Osborn’s book Get Serious on improving overall health and fitness. I am only about a quarter of the way into the book, but I have reached a section that has peaked my interest. This section is focused on structuring an exercise routine. It includes both the type of exercises to perform, how to perform them, and how many repetitions and sets to perform.

Have you ever wondered, “Does my workout have the intensity that I need to reach my fitness goals?” Then there are other issues such as overtraining, type of exercises, and form that complicate things even more. These issues have caused me to abandon my workout for several weeks or even months at a time. Dr. Brett Osborn’s outlined exercise plan has eliminated many of these issues for me.
Without giving away too much, his plan consists of a core 5 of exercises to get in every week. These include bench press, squat, dead lift, overhead press, and pull-ups. Two of these exercises are done on the same day; one is done for increasing strength, and one is done for stimulating muscle growth (hypertrophy). There are also some additional workouts used to supplement the hypertrophy exercise. For example, here was the workout I just performed yesterday:
- Bench Press: 5 sets x 5 reps
- Dead Lift: 3 sets x 8 reps
- Seated Row: 3 sets x 8 reps
- Leg Curl: 3 sets x 8 reps
- Leg raises (abs): 3 sets x 12 reps

Here’s a pic of me when I was killing it in the gym! This style of weight lifting is much different than the ones I followed in the past. The most obvious way was in how much shorter the workout was. It lasted just over 30 minutes which was a nice change from my past workouts that have lasted over an hour. Also, I have not done workouts where I train for both strength and muscle growth. I thought growth was a product of increasing strength, but Dr. Osborn explains the factors that distinguish strength gains from size gains. The number of reps per set is one you probably noticed above!
If anyone is interested in learning more about the specifics of this workout plan, leave a comment!

Advice on Advice
For a lot of my life, I have wanted to be the person who found my own way. I always wanted to find solutions to my own problems, and if someone gave me advice, I would often look 180° in the opposite direction for an answer. Recently, I have realized the power of looking deeper into the advice from highly successful people and others I greatly respect. This could mean taking note of who they say has expertise in my interests/problems or reflecting longer on their suggestions. It has made my life noticeably better in a very short amount of time.
Beginning a blog was tough for me because I have never looked at other peoples’ blogs. How then, could I expect others to look at my stuff? However, since I started, I have noticed how other people have some very useful tips in their blogs. Also, other people have some great content on a lot of the same topics I am interested in. I now assume (and hope) they think the same about my blog.
New blogs haven’t been the only area of my life that I have taken new advice from. Before the New Year, my parents gave me the book Gorilla Mindset (book review coming soon) by Mike Cernovich. Around this time I was still in my “selfish self-help mindset” and was very skeptical before starting the book. I decided to take a chance on the book (partly because I am on a challenge to read at least 10 pages per day). This book has linked me to several other great reads, many through the recommendations of the author. I started to realize that there is a commonality between many successful instructors. Many, if not all, of them are very open about naming the people or methods that helped them become happier, smarter, more successful, etc.

I am striving to be more considerate of the suggestions trusted people are offering me. There are many reasons why I might have been resistant to get help in the past. My time was wasted, too much pride, or not enough personal care could have all been contributing factors. This ‘Why’ isn’t as important to me. The past is the past, and I am excited to keep learning from my growing network. I am thankful for all those past, present, and future who have given and will give great advice. Hopefully, you will get some from me too.

Should I drink a gallon of water every day?
For 2022, I started a fitness and mental health challenge that involves drinking a full gallon of water for 75 days (Currently on day 26/75). For anyone interested, this challenge is called 75 Hard. I plan to write more about the other aspects of this program in future posts. Whether you are participating in this challenge or not, at one point in your life you may ask yourself, “Should I start drinking a gallon of water everyday?”
Being properly hydrated has many benefits. Some include healthier skin, improved physical performance, and reduced cravings. Personally, the decrease in cravings was noticeable to me in just two weeks of drinking a gallon per day. Also, I often used to cramp after exercises and that has gone away entirely. The amount of time it takes to recover from a workout has also significantly decreased. As a former athlete and active person, I am loving these benefits.
The only drawbacks I have noticed include bloating and FREQUENT bathroom use. If you commit to drinking a gallon of water everyday, I highly suggest having a set portion of the gallon finished by a certain time of the day. Or else you could end up like me.. Drinking nearly half of a gallon 30 minutes before you try to sleep that night. This will surely result in 3-5 night time disturbances, and if you are sleep deprived, maybe some soaked sheets (has not happened to me, thankfully).
The bottom line is to make sure you’re getting at least some fixed amount of pure water everyday. Adding MiO, drinking soda/coffee/other liquids, etc. are not viable substitutes for whatever your set amount will be. There’s too much variation when considering these alternatives, and it becomes too hard to track. Before starting this challenge, my water intake was extremely variable. Some days I would have a few glasses of pure water, but other days my hydration would come entirely from flavored drinks-many that are actually dehydrating me due to their diuretic properties. If I were not committed to 75 Hard, I probably would not be drinking a full gallon per day, but somewhere closer to 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon. Either way, stick to your set amount, finish it daily, and start feeling the benefits!
I included a picture below of the gallon jug I use that tells me when I should have certain amounts of the gallon finished.. It’s after noon, and I have a lot of work to do!

Hello, Everyone
What is up, viewers? I decided to start this blog to build a brand as an anonymous blogger. I will not likely have a consistent topic to post about, but my favorite topics are self-improvement, psychology/mental health, and sharing products that I use everyday. I promise I will not recommend anything that I have not tried myself and would not recommend to my friends. Hopefully, we can become friends if you find yourself relating to some of the content I post.
About me
I am a recent college graduate from the west coast in U.S.A. I have lived all across the States, but I’m currently residing close to my alma mater. I grew up with a dream of playing professional baseball, which lead me to picking a school I thought would be a mean to that end. When this dream started to slip away, I shifted focus on what I could do with my education. I spent most of my time in college either playing baseball or trying to be a top-performer in my classes. Perfectionism has been a defining trait for me and has allowed me to excel in the areas I put my mind to. Although, there are many things that I wish I was better at (public speaking, organization, memorizing, etc.) that do not come as easily. I finished college with near-perfect grades and was a top-performer on an admissions test that might land me a spot in a professional school. In the meantime, I am working for The Man in a laboratory where I test food products for Salmonella and other harmful bacteria contamination. Still, I can’t protect Burger King from spittin’ on your onion rings (Eminem’s one of my favorite rappers).
There is a lot more to me that I hope to be able to share through reflections about the topics I write about. I encourage everyone to leave a comment about how the post made you feel or share any other thoughts/questions you have. If you haven’t already, head over to Instagram (@Eddgysuggests) and hit a follow.
Until next time, peace out
